Richard asks…

Does anyone know of a travel insurance company who insures Brits living abroad?

I live in Greece and all the insurance companies cater for UK residents only. Can anyone give me the name of a company who will insure me for a trip to the UK? Greek companies are way too expensive.

Greece History

Daniel Greece History

Daniel asks…

Where can i find a good comprehensive online ancient history book?

I can find different pieces on Wikipedia and such,

But i wish there were a connected / search by time/search by geographic location easily – navigated website where one could learn about ancient history ( egypt, stone age, etc).

Anyone know?

Players Club Tours answers:

Unfortunately, the best book is still currently in French. The “Dictionnaire de l’Antiquité” edited by Jean Leclant is a 2300 page monster cross-referencing every topic from prostitution to funeral rites across Rome, Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia and Syria-Palestine using hundreds of world-renowned specialists.

There is nothing that comes close in English, never mind online. For now, Google Books does offer an array of texts with a terrible search engine to find them. Good luck but Wiki is still your best bet.

The End.

Can anyone explain what exactly is going on in Greece right now?

It’s been all over the news lately, but I’m a bit confused still.
Also, any opinions?

Steve, you are a bit mistaken.
There are 4 weeks vacation (actually, working 22 days), free healthcare yes, retire after 35 years of work, (now maybe 40) and being at least 60y.o. And the retirement salary is money that workers actually paid. (Keeping a portion from salary in order to get it in retirement|)

Lizzie Greece Weather

Lizzie asks…

What should I eat when the weather is hot?

So it’s starting to get hot & I am starting to get fat & malnourished again, haha! The problem for me is that I have spent most of my life in a cooler climate & my cooking is more suitable for cold weather. As it’s too hot to have the oven on for long, what can I eat other than salads & delivery? I would appreciate answers just from Greeks & people who live in Greece like me please as you know what ingredients are available.

Thank you!

Players Club Tours answers:

Salads, cold dishes mainly, and lots of fruit. Nothing too heavy or you will be sorry.
Also, when outside your house, keep a bottle of water with you.
If you are moving to a big city, I suggest that you listen to the news when they say: do not leave your house unless it is absolutely necessary.
You can pretty much find everything else you would in another place, especially in a big city or a place that attracts many tourists during the summer months.
The brands may be different though.

David Greece Default

David asks…

What would happen to the UK if Greece leaves the Euro?

What would happen to the UK if Greece leaves the Euro?

just want to know what you think will happen.

full square brown cropped Greece Default

Players Club Tours answers:

Well if Greece leaves the Euro, they will default on their debts they have. Basically in short it would be disastrous for Greece, the banking system would be badly damaged also.
However for the tourists it would be a lot cheaper, as the value of money would obviously be different.

There are many mixed reactions of what will actually happen to Greece, what we are certain of though is there will be know way of avoiding the debts they already have.

However the U.K would be hardly affected from this at all. We hardly take in any of their exports and well we don’t use the Euro personally. So in whole, not much will happen to the U.K.

George Greece Facts

George asks…

Can somebody list some of the political and cultural achievements Hellenic and Hellenistic Greece?

Again, I am not looking for too much detail. Just broad information. I am about to write an essay on the topic, and I would just like some of the basic facts so that I have somewhere to begin. Thank you!!

full square brown cropped Greece Facts

Players Club Tours answers:

The achievements of Hellenic culture would include Maths, Science (Archimedes, Pythagoras) , Philosophy (Aristotle, Plato and Socrates), architecture, astronomy and medicine (Hippocrates – Hippocratic oath) of. Much of these modern day disciplines is based on what the Greeks first discovered.

The idea of logic and reason came from the Greeks.
Even the first recognised Historian was a Greek called Herodotus.
In poetry the genius of the Hellenes created both form and content, which have remained a constant source of inspiration in European literature.

The Hellenes became the founders of European democracy. The strong political sense of the Greeks produced a variety of systems of government from which their theory of political science abstracted types of constitution that are still in use. The tendency for ever-wider sections of the community to participate in the life of the state brought into being the free democratic citizens.

The spirit of Greek civilization subsequently exercised a great influence upon Rome. The Greek language was the lingua franca of its time (not Latin). Greek culture became one of the principal components of Roman imperial culture and together with it spread throughout Europe. When Christian teaching appeared in the Middle East, the Greek world of ideas exercised a decisive influence upon its spiritual evolution.
The New Testament was written in Greek.

The Greek language became the language of the Byzantine state, and its usage spread to the Balkans. The Byzantine Empire, of which Greece was the core, protected Europe against potential invaders from Anatolia until the fall of Constantinople in 1453.

Greece Beaches Santorini

Thomas Greece Beaches Santorini

Thomas asks…

GREEK vacation planning…need advice please…?

My wife and I want to visit Greece…Probably start in athens and then go island hopping….Santorini is a must.

What other islands would you recommend. We like islands with nice beaches that are peaceful.

What is the best way to travel between the islands?

Is it a good idea to do a Greek Island cruise?

Are there any good Greek package providers that someone can please suggest?

Thank you so much for your help.

full square brown cropped Greece Beaches Santorini

Players Club Tours answers:

Crete is ridiculously amazing. Go there for sure, but you’ll need to carve out a couple days for it. See the North Coast (I recommend Rethymnon- stay in a bungalow on Camping Elizabeth- most amazing place I’ve been), and the South Coast (take a ferry to Lutro, only accesable by ferry) and spending some time in the little villages between (donkeys, olive groves, fresh springs). The beaches on the south coast are rarely ever populated, just drive away from the hotels and the towns.

I think Santorini is only good for a day/a couple hours– it’s EXTREMELY touristy and has some nice views, but is over priced and hot as hell (i.e. Not peaceful). I wouldn’t spend the night there. Cruises are icky, I would say get some ferry tickets and rent a car on the bigge islands so you can get to the perfectly pristine beaches.
