3 Reasons to Travel While You’re Young

3 Reasons to Travel While You’re Young

If you’ve graduated college and have yet to get a passport you have an emptiness inside. You are stuck in the rat race of daily routine. Never enlightened to anything outside your own culture. As each year ticks by you’re getting closer to depriving yourself of ever experiencing the world.

Terameno, Sicily

Do you think it will get any easier to travel when you’re married and have a ton of responsibilities? Don’t settle for being ordinary.” Have you ever though to yourself. “I hate this city, it’s always the same old predictable routine.” You’re doing this to yourself by being a follower of the crowd. A Sheep! Your friends aren’t as interesting as you may think they are or your wouldn’t feel this void.

The other night, I had a conversation with a young woman who had a number of decisions ahead of her, one of which was whether she should go to grad school or travel the world. I told her to travel. Hands down. No excuses. Just go. The rewards are worth the costs.

She sighed.
“Yeah, but…”
Never were more fatal words spoken:
• Yeah, but… what about debt?
• Yeah, but… what about my job?
• Yeah, but… what about my boyfriend (or dog or car or whatever)?

“Yeah, but…” makes it sound like we have the best of intentions when really we are just too scared to do what we should. It allows us to be cowards, while sounding noble.

Most people I know who waited to travel the world never did. Be careful of the yeah-but. The yeah-but will kill the dreams of your youth.

The life you’ve always wanted

When you get older, life seems to just sort of happen to you. Your youth is a time of total empowerment. You get to do what you want. But as you mature and gain new responsibilities, you have to be very intentional about making sure you don’t lose sight of what’s important. So if you still have a reasonable amount of control over your circumstances, you should do what really matters. Because life won’t always be just about you.

Paris

During early adulthood, your worldview is still being formed. It’s important to give yourself opportunities to grow. A good way to do that is to travel. You will regret few risks you take when it comes to this. I promise you that. There are three reasons to travel while you’re young:

1. Traveling teaches you to live an adventure

In your lifetime, you will not be able to remember all of your experiences over the years. You will, however remember the special moments. The feeling you have for a moment in your life when you feel part of something.

CafeDelMar 300x180 3 Reasons to Travel While You’re Young

Cafe Del Mar Ibiza

While you’re young, you should travel. You should take the time to see the world and taste the fullness of life. It’s worth whatever investment or money or sacrifice of time that may be required on your part. This is not about being a tourist. It’s about experiencing true risk and adventure so you don’t have to live in fear for the rest of your life.

2. Traveling helps you encounter compassion

In your youth, you will make choices that will define you. The disciplines you begin now will be with you for the rest of your life. Traveling will change you like little else can. It will put you in places that will force you to care for issues that are bigger than you.

Seaside, Amalfi Coast, Italy

If you go to Asia, you may encounter the slave trade. If eastern Europe, you may see the effects of genocide and religious persecution. If Haiti, you’ll witness the the ugly side Western paternalism.

Your heart will break. You will begin to understand that the world is both a big and small place. You will have a new-found respect for the pain and suffering that over half of the world takes for granted on a daily basis. And you will feel more connected to your fellow human beings in a deep and lasting way. You will learn to care.

3. Traveling allows you to get some culture

While you’re still young, you should get cultured. Get to know the world and the magnificent people that fill it. There’s nothing quite like sitting beside thousands of people from all over the globe to watch a sunset at Ibiza’s Café Del Mar..

Shangri La Hotel Paris 300x225 3 Reasons to Travel While You’re YoungI can describe Paris to you, but the feeling that the city gives to me is something you’d have to experience for yourself. You can read all the books in the world about the Great Wall of China, but being there is a different story.
The world is a stunning place, full amazing adventures. See it. Do this while you’re still young. Do not squander the time. You will never have it again.

You have a crucial opportunity to invest in the next season of your life now. Whatever you sow, you will eventually reap. Please. For your sake, do this. Because you won’t always be young. And life won’t always be just about you. So travel. Experience the world for all it’s worth. Become a person of culture, adventure, and compassion.

“What if I’m not young?”

Travel, anyway. It may not be easy to do, but find a way to get out of your comfort zone. It’s really never too late.
But if you haven’t gotten sucked into the routine of life yet, I implore you to  TRAVEL. It will never be easier than it is right now for you to do that which really matters.

St Thomas Virgin Islands All Inclusive

Betty St Thomas Virgin Islands All Inclusive

Betty asks…

U.S Virgin Islands? Anyone ever been there and are there any all inclusives?

I am having a hard time finding information regarding St Thomas and St Croix areas. I am looking for unique rooms that offer jacuzzi’s either indoors or outdoors that are private. All inclusive hotel listings will score you points!!!!

full square brown cropped St Thomas Virgin Islands All Inclusive

Players Club Tours answers:

Loved to help you out. There are not many all-inclusive resorts in the USVI. I only know 3 and they are in St Thomas. The Marriott Frenchman”s Reef has an all-inclusive option, Bolongo Bay Beach Resort has semi and all-inclusive options available, Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort & Spa also has all-inclusive option.

To be truthful, the restaurants are excellent in the USVI and I can’t imagine wanting an all-inclusive resort.

Maybe other islands like Jamaica , Barbados, Dominican Republic, Aruba or even Mexico are better options for you.
Sandals Resort sound like the type of place you are looking for. Http://www.sandals.com
They are all-inclusive and have private pools and jacuzzi

Have you checked tripadvisor for some other suggestions.

When we go to the USVI, we stay on St John and rent a villa. They usually have a pool or hot tub. Sometimes both.
We provision the villa our self for breakfast, lunch, snacks, soft drinks and liquor. We usually go out to dinner every night. We love having all that space verus a resort room.

Good Luck, maybe other posters can come up with some help)

Best (& most beautiful) PARTY vacation spots for a group of girls?

Hi!
Me and 6 or 7 other girls are planning to go away around April next year (when we all finish school). Coming from Toronto in Canada. We’ll all be 19/20 years old and are looking to go somewhere tropical and beautiful but where we can also really party. Location ideas? Details?
Also, I’ve never booked a vacation before so any suggestions on the most inexpensive yet safe and hospitable way of going about doing so would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much.

full square brown cropped Ibiza Hotels

Players Club Tours answers:

Safe? Stay in the US. Panama City, FL is a big party spot, although it could be a bit difficult (not too bad) to drink since you’ll be under 21.

Beautiful? Punta Cana, DR is awesome and a great party place, although it isn’t the safest area in the world. Greek Islands, such as Mykanos, have a great party scene and are safe, but relatively expensive.

Party? Cancun and Ibiza are the tops in the world. Ibiza is expensive, Cancun is not as safe as some others, but they are the top places to go.

Alternative idea: Go to a college somewhere that has a liberal party atmosphere and party your asses off. Everyone will love a group of girls showing up to their parties, you won’t have to pay for anything, and you can stay in the safety of the US/Canada.

In general, book a flight and hotels on Kayak (or a vacation package/cruise which can be really fun as well), don’t trust anyone who solicits you (always use cabs/hotels/bars that you seek out), and don’t ever go somewhere alone and you’ll be fine and have a great time.

Michael asks…

I’m leaving for Costa Rica in January when should I buy?

I’ll be going from Minneapolis to San Jose, Costa Rica. I’m volunteering there for 3 months. All of the deals I’ve found are only good if I’m staying for 2 weeks or so. Is it possible to find cheap tickets if I’m staying so long? And is now a good time to buy or should I keep waiting?

The exact dates are January 16th – April 9th with a little bit of wiggle room on each end.

Players Club Tours answers:

You just need to make sure you compare prices on a daily basis for a couple of weeks. If something seems cheaper than usual, jump on it! There are quite a few sites that you can search that will likely give you the best prices available. Check out the website BookMe and you will be able to compare prices on all the reputable travel sites in just a couple minutes. It’s very convenient and will save you a bunch of time and money. Also, make sure you buy them online… Otherwise they charge much higher fees for phone orders. Good luck.

COSTA RICA, not california

full square brown cropped Tours Costa Rica San Jose

Players Club Tours answers:

I know that San Jose does get a bad rap and is not the perfect town, however, there is a lot of awesome things one can see on the local culture, which is a another side of Costa Rica that few have ventured into..

You see a local play at the Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica – http://www.teatronacional.go.cr/

Your can take the Costa Rica Art Tour in San Jose where you view local artists and their works – http://www.costaricaarttour.com/. This is pretty cool if you like art. You get a local meal, group tours are small, and they provide transportation.

You can go to Costa Rica Natural Museums, where you can view historical interest, gold and jade displays and more http://www.museocostarica.go.cr/. This is very awesome, I took my teenage boys to this a few years back and they loved it.

There are a ton of great places to eat, go to the below link from yahoo

http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-2770641-san_jose_restaurants-i

Personally, if you got a few bucks to spend and want a eating orgy of meats go to El Mejor, but you will need reservations

As for shopping, Metro Central and Mall Mult Plaza, and the farmers market (but be careful here, this place get packed and a lot of pickpockets etc)

I hope this helps

Enjoy the other side of Costa Rica and in San Jose…

A Few Recommended Sites To See While There:

Tree of Life…

The Tree of Life tour is located in the southern zone of Costa Rica between Dominical and San Isidro del General. The property is comprised of hundreds of acres of primary rainforest and cloud forest that stretch from the Pacific Ocean to the summit of the Tinamaste Mountains at 3,300 feet in elevation. This mountain range is a vital watershed to the Baru River, which originates in the mountains with a number of spectacular waterfalls, including the magnificent Diamante Falls, which are 600 feet tall.

The hike up to the camp area is quite strenuous, but stops are made along the way to learn about medicinal plants and the land. After a couple hours of hiking, the jungle opens to an amazingly beautiful double waterfall that is approximately 150 feet high. As you walk in, you will notice a cave tucked in behind the waterfalls with a stone walkway leading to the entrance.

The Tree of Life tour company has furnished the cave with everything needed for survival including a fully functioning kitchen, bathrooms, showers and rough bedding. A night in this cave is a moment in time that will never be forgotten!

To fill the time, one can hike to the various waterfalls, explore the jungle or even rappel down the falls. There is a waterfall and pool area within an hour hike that is great for cliff jumping or just swimming in cool, fresh water surrounded by cloud forest.

Volcan Turrialba National Park…

Turrialba Volcano National Park is located in the Cartago Province and encompasses over 3,900 acres of land. The park was established in 1955 to preserve the volcano and the vegetation that surrounds it. This volcano hasn’t had a major eruption since the 1800s, but visitors are often able to witness volcanic activity via stream, smoke and ash bursts.

There are well marked trails throughout Turrialba Volcano National Park that lead visitors to several gorgeous lookout points. The trails lead through the primary and secondary forest that are full of wildlife and flora that can be easily sighted out by a guide. Visitors have the option to embark the hike either by foot or by horseback. During these hikes and rides, visitors will also be able to observe the markings of lava flows from the former eruptions in the 1800s.
Many consider the Central Valley to be the most comfortable climate in the world with temperatures usually hovering in the upper 70s during the day and lower 60s at night. The rain season here runs from May through November, though the heavy rains are generally during September and October. Visitors should pack shorts, tee shirts, appropriate shoes, rain gear, sun block. It is also advised to bring at least one pair of pants and a long sleeve shirt.

The Flowers and Orchids of Costa Rica

Follow our Travels on Twitter—>>

Costa Rica has an astonishing number of plants, and people are drawn from all over the world to see the beautiful flowers that grow here.  Of special interest to many are the numerous varieties of orchids.  In fact, Costa Rica has over Thirteen Hundred species of orchids.  Below, (thanks to contributor Paul Mitchell), is some more information on these marvelous plants!

If you are an orchid fancier in the States or elsewhere than the tropics you are in for a fabulous treat once you get to Costa Rica.

In Costa Rica there are various options for seeing / studying orchids. Those that come to mind are, in nature, in botanical gardens, and in the regional orchid shows, specifically at the National Orchid Exposition.

Rica in the wild is just as the rainy season is starting up with the first scant rains. Many of the orchids in nature are triggered into their blooming cycle at that time. There are more than 1300 recognized species of orchids in Costa Rica. Some are small, some large, many are quite showy. Many have amazing scents or perfumes, along with a few that smell truly unpleasant. Bring your nose along. You will be intrigued at the variety of odors the various orchid species can emit.

You may be able to arrange a knowledgeable guide to take you into natural habitats to see some of the native orchid species in bloom. Costa Rica’s strong conservation laws and efforts at replenishing native orchid species in the wild preclude taking any orchids from the wild –except by making photo records of them in situ to carry away with you inside your camera.

You can also visit one of the amazing botanical gardens in the country like Lankester Botanical Gardens just east of the old capital, Cartago. Or the Wilson Botanical Gardens in the south east part of the country near San Vito de Java. Each one is worth a day trip and requires three or more hours to explore properly.

There is also a garden in Palmares that is dedicated to nothing other than the national flower, Cattleya skinneri, pictured above and known locally as the ‘guaria morada.’ This small garden is well worth a visit during the blooming season for once inside you will find yourself in a sea of electric lavender-purple blooms as far as you can look in whatever direction you choose to glance. It is truly spectacular. Ask the locals for directions once you get to town or call the garden beforehand to ask. It is called the Jardin de Guarias Cocaleca. Their number in Palmares is 452-0091

The National Orchid Exposition is admittedly the crown jewel of orchid shows in Costa Rica. Presented in March of each year in San José, it brings together blooming orchids from the best growers all over the country. It is a riot of colors, extraordinary shapes, and exotic perfumes. It is at this show you can see many varieties of the national orchid (mentioned above) ranging in color from whites thru pinks to that glorious intense lavender-purple colored form. There is a competition for the best of each color form and for the best overall in the show. There are always some remarkably handsome specimens of this much revered species on display in this big show.

If you cannot be in Costa Rica for the National Orchid Exposition, there are smaller regional shows staged in different parts of the country. There is about one show per month and if you watch the newspapers there will be an announcement of where a particular show is taking place. In any event, bring along your camera and plan on taking lots of pictures. Orchids make fine photographic subjects.

If you are really lucky you may get an invitation to visit a private orchid collection. There are a number of stupendous collections of orchids held privately. A visit to one of these collections is not to be missed, so if you are invited to see one don’t pass it up.
