Macau

Donald Macau

Donald asks…

Is it possible to live a Portuguese-only life in the Chinese special administrative region of Macau?

A friend of mine from Brazil will be living in Macau for at least one year for a temporary job posting. Portuguese is his first language and he speaks not a word of Chinese.

Macau was formerly a colony of Portugal that was returned to China in 1999. Portuguese is retained in the territory as one of its co-official languages. However, the Cantonese dialect of Chinese is the major native language of Macau and only a small portion of the population uses Portuguese on a regular basis.

Still, is Portuguese prevalent enough in Macau where you could survive using just that language? Are all government services still offered in Portuguese? Are media and cultural resources still widely available in the language? Do enough everyday people in Macau have at least some basic knowledge of the language so that you can undertake all your day-to-day tasks (i.e. shopping, getting around, paying utility bills, etc.) in Portuguese?

Players Club Tours answers:

They speak Portuguese, in some areas,
Althought the majority of the Macanese people speak Cantonoese, they know at least the basics of Portuguese (or an hybrid version of it, Creole) if they are native to the island.

Yes, your friend will be able to live in Macau as if he was living in Portugal.
Macanese culture was influenced by the Portuguese themselves. Just look at it’s architecture, gastronomy, etc.

Joseph asks…

Has anyone ever bought a last minute summer holiday?

Hi! Basically my boyfriend and I have just decided we want to go away somewhere for a week over the summer but we can’t go until July. We’re both students and can’t really afford the really expensive peak holiday time prices, so we were thinking about booking one really last minute. Has anyone ever got a really good deal doing it that way or is it not a good idea?

Players Club Tours answers:

Ive done it twice, once to Ibiza & once to Corfu. Both were amazing deals. Ibiza I booked it & 13 days later went away, for Corfu I booked it & we flew 46 hours later! I highly reccommend it, Corfu was even allocation on arrival & it was a beautiful hotel & very cheap. Was a hassle trying to pack so quickly, but if you can do it its totally worth it.

Secrets the Cruise Lines Don’t Tell You

Cruise Lines the Secrets that they Don’t Tell You

Cruise ship life can be a little mysterious. All of your choices aren’t always spelled out in black and white. The more you cruise, the more you pick up on the unofficial cruising “secrets” that give you more options, let you save money and generally allow you to have a better time onboard.

Maybe it’s knowing just what your cabin steward is able to bring you or what the off-the-menu items are at the bar or dining room. Or perhaps it’s a tip to getting a good deal on an onboard purchase.

But why wait to figure these things out the hard way — possibly after you’ve missed your chance? We trawled through all the great advice on cruise line message boards to bring you some of the worst-kept cruising secrets out there…at least among our readers who love to share. But whether you’re a first-time cruiser or an old seadog, you may find there’s something here you didn’t already know.

Foodcruise secrets food Secrets the Cruise Lines Dont Tell You

  1. You are not limited to one of each appetizer, entrée and dessert in the main dining room. You can order two entrees or three desserts if you choose. You can also order appetizer-sized portions of entrees as starters or order a few appetizers for your main meal. It’s a great way to try new foods you’re not sure you’ll like (escargot, anyone?).
  2. Room service is free of charge, except for late-night hours on certain lines, such as Royal Caribbean. It’s recommended you tip your delivery person, but in-room dining is not the splurge it is at a hotel.
  3. Most people dine in the main dining room or buffet on the first night of the cruise, and many haven’t discovered the specialty restaurants yet. If you book an alternative dining venue for the first night of the cruise, you may get a discount on select lines (like Celebrity Cruises) or have an easier time getting a reservation for a popular venue. Carnival Cruise Lines passengers who dine in the Steakhouse on the first night get a free bottle of wine.
  4. Specialty coffee at the designated coffee shops onboard comes with an extra fee, but the pastries, sandwiches and other food at these venues are often free. While some specialty items (like chocolate-covered strawberries) will have a charge, don’t assume all the small bites do.
  5. Like ice cream? Cruise lines will charge for branded licks like Ben & Jerry’s and Celebrity’s gelato. However, there’s always a free version — whether soft-serve machines on the Lido Deck or hard-serve stations at the buffet. And do your reconnaissance — Cruise Critic members report that soft-serve machines on either side of the deck can have different flavors.
  6. On embarkation day, most people head straight to the buffet to have lunch and wait for their cabins to open. It’s a mob scene. But many cruise ships have alternative venues open — the main dining room or a mini-buffet in the solarium or atrium area. Ask a crewmember or check your daily newsletter to find an alternative for a calmer first meal. For example, on Princess Cruises, the International Cafe, Pizzeria and Grill are open; on Royal Caribbean ships, Sorrento’s, the Solarium and Park Cafes, Giovanni’s Table and Starbucks are open on embark afternoon.
  7. Don’t know which night to make specialty dinner reservations? The main dining room menus are planned for the week, and the purser’s desk often has access to those menus. Ask to see them so you can decide which nights are less appealing and which you don’t want to miss, and plan your cruise accordingly.

Drinkcruise secrets rci beer2 Secrets the Cruise Lines Dont Tell You

  1. There’s no “open beverage” rule onboard. You can bring drinks from a bar or buffet to your cabin or elsewhere on the ship and no one will bat an eye. (Same goes for food.)
  2. It’s often cheaper to buy a bottle of wine than a few glasses — but what do you do if you don’t finish the bottle? Cruise ship waiters can mark the bottle with your room number and save it for another night, even for dinner in another onboard venue.
  3. Groups of beer drinkers can save by ordering buckets of beer. You get four or five beers in a souvenir bucket at a per-beer cost slightly cheaper than ordering individual bottles.
  4. On most lines, soda is not free — but iced tea in the dining room usually is. Save on soda by buying a soda card, offering a set price for unlimited soft drinks.
  5. Most lines let you bring a reasonable amount of nonalcoholic drinks onboard. Save on pricey shipboard sodas and bottled waters by bringing your own.
  6. Some cruisers use their stateroom Bibles for more than spiritual counsel. Cruise Critic members report that they will leave unused drinks cards or coupons in their Bibles. So be sure to flip through yours to make sure a surprise isn’t waiting.
  7. Enticed by all those special drinks in a souvenir glass? You can refill those glasses at a discount — or ask to have the drink of the day in a regular glass to save money. Also watch your daily program for drink specials or happy hours with reduced price beverages.

Cabincruise secrets cabin celeb Secrets the Cruise Lines Dont Tell You

  1. Most cabins are made of metal…and therefore they’re magnetic. Bring along some magnets (or buy some as souvenirs) and you can keep all your cocktail party invites, alternative dining reservation notices and daily planners hung up on the walls and doors.
  2. Inside cabins have no natural light. At all. Turn your TV to the bridge cam station, turn off the sound and — voila! — you’ve got an instant nightlight and a way to see if the sun is up.
  3. With all of the electronics we tote around with us these days, most people find cruise ship outlets to be insufficient. You can bring your own charging station or power strip (check to see if these are legal on your cruise line), but you may also want to ask your cabin steward. Sometimes there’s an extra outlet hidden behind the TV or under the bed.
  4. Picky about your bedding? Some lines will provide egg crate mattress toppers, top sheets and alternative pillow types by special request. Feel free to ask, before or during your cruise.
  5. Cabin designers are pretty smart about creating as much storage space as possible. Do a little exploring or ask your cabin steward for a tour. You may be surprised to find extra storage under the bed or couch, inside an ottoman, or behind a mirror.
  6. If you’re feeling queasy, don’t run out to a pharmacy before making some calls. Room service can bring you green apples and bland crackers (crewmembers swear by the apple remedy) and often you can get seasickness meds from the purser’s desk for free.

Entertainmentcruise secrets spa rci2 Secrets the Cruise Lines Dont Tell You

  1. Casino frequenters can get a hole punched in their room card and a free lanyard from the casino staff for easy play without forgetting your card in the slot machines.
  2. Many lines offer free minutes if you sign up for an Internet package on the first day of the cruise.
  3. Cruise ship spas often offer discounts for first-day and sea-day treatments. Stop by the spa or check your daily newsletters to find out about deals.
  4. If the port talk is at the same time as your massage, don’t worry. Presentations and audience-participation shows are often re-broadcast on the ship’s channel on your in-room TV. You can still catch the recording if you miss the live show.
  5. Use of the showers, saunas and stream rooms not located in fancy thermal suites are free to use. Showering in the spa can often mean access to more clean towels, fancy toiletries and bigger shower stalls — and prevents fights over who gets cabin bathroom access first. Using the free saunas is a great remedy for that inevitable vacation head cold that stuffs you up.

cruise secrets cookies Secrets the Cruise Lines Dont Tell You Line-Specific Secrets

  1. Celebrity’s buffet secrets include delicious ship-made hard-serve ice cream (for free) in the buffet and made-to-order waffles with a choice of toppings. You can also order a cup of candy toppings with no ice cream if that’s your treat of choice.
  2. On Holland America, many cruisers don’t know that the Pinnacle Grill is half price at lunchtime and free chocolate truffles make an appearance in the Explorer’s Lounge each evening.
  3. Princess ships serve up cookies and milk at 3 p.m. on the pool deck and in the Piazza.

Costa Rican Cuisine

Costa Rican cuisine is simple but heavy on oil and some species. Comida tipica or native dishes, rely heavily on rice and beans, the basis of many Costa Rican meals. Home-style cooking predominates. But meals are generally wholesome and reasonably priced. Gallo Pinto, the national dish of fried rice and black beans is particularly served as a breakfast. Notable is the famed Rice n’ Beans of the Caribbean, a Gallo Pinto made in coconut milk, worth trying. Many meals are derivatives, including arroz con pollo or arroz con atun. At lunch Gallo Pinto becomes Casado : rice and beans supplemented with cabbage and tomato salad, fried platains, and meat. Vegetables do not form a large part of the diet. Costa Rica home cuisine has an inordinately ammount of fried foods so keep that in mind when you receive and invitation for dinner.

costarica1 1024x768 Costa Rican Cuisine

Food staples include beef, chicken, fish and despite of the 1.000+ kilometers of coastline, seafood like shrimp or lobster, is expensive because Costa Rica exports most of its seafood. Travelers with low budget should stick with the casado on lunch time menus, or ‘plato del dia’ which is a close cousin of the casado with a common denominator of low price and varied ingredients.

Eating in Costa Rica doesn’t present the health problems that plague the unwary traveler elsewhere in Central America, but you need to be aware that some of the pesticides used in Costa Rica are forbidden elsewhere. Something I should say is that you may eat where the locals eat, usually that means tasty and trustworthy food. Beware of black beans and chicharrones, which might prove to be too much for some foreign stomachs.

Costa Rica has no national drink, but very popular in the cultural tradition of drinks are Horchata, a cinnamon flavored cornmeal drink, Chan, a slimy drink made of seeds, Linaza, which is popularly used to cure indigestion, and Fresco de Frutas, which is basically a fruit salad floating on a base of kola and water, delicious!! And, of course, guaro, the campesino’s nearly-tasteless yet potent alcoholic drink of choice. And coffee of course, Costa Rica’s grain of gold. Most of the best coffee is exported, so don’t expect the best coffee everywhere you go. Coffee is traditionally served very strong and mixed with hot milk.

Many bars in Costa Rica have the now disappearing habit of serving bocas with each drink , bocas are different types of food in small amounts, usually ceviche or chicken wings or bean soup, to have a better time with your drinks. Some bars provide them free but others may apply a small charge. Turtle eggs which may have been taken in a special legal season are a very popular dish in many bars for its special taste, but are best avoided  because of the possibility of having been poached illegally.

Imported drinks may be expensive so you might be better of trying with the local Costa Rican drinks. The beer is a very popular drink and the ones of most sale are Bavaria and Imperial. Even the poorest campesino can afford the native red-eye, guaro, a harsh , clear spirit distilled from fermented sugarcane. In rural areas you might find Vino de Coyol, which is a wine distilled from liquid that is collected on holes on the trunk of a very spiny palm, drink with caution, intoxication goes away, but many say if you go out in the sun with a Coyol hangover, you might find yourself drunk again.

Avoid the local wines, all of which are made from fruits other than grapes, such as blackberries and ‘nance’. The most memorable thing of them is the hangover. Imported wines are expensive with exemption of the ones from Chile or Argentina which are of great quality. We personally like the Cousino Macul, imported from Portugal.

What sort of day tours to mainland China from Hong Kong do you recommend?

I would like to take a day excursion to mainland China when I go to Hong Kong. Since I am a US citizen, I am not eligible for the Shenzen Visa, and think a regular Chinese Visa may be a little pricey for a day trip. But I was reading that if you go in a tour you will get a group visa for the whole tour group, if I understand that correctly. If that is true, what sort of tours out there do you recommend from Hong Kong? Thank you.

what travel agency in the philippines that offers the cheapest rate for hong kong package tour?

full square brown cropped Hong Kong Tours Package

Players Club Tours answers:

Package tours are always more expensive than booking yourself, this is because the agents will take a commision, cebu pacific fly very cheap to hong kong, surf the net and hunt out a good cheap hotel,

the advantage of a packeage tour is if you are short on time to plan your trip, they take care of everything, i always travel independantly, but that suits me.

Stanley is a really nice quiet place to go. They have a beach there. The winding roads leading to Stanley is beautiful & clean. Or take a trip to Lam Tsuen where the wishing tree is. Or have a meal at the Yucca De Lac restaurant which is located in Tai Po Road – Ma Liu Shui. The MTR stop is Shatin. What about a cruise to nowhere on the HK waters aboard the Star Cruises Pisces? You should not miss the Avenue of Stars (make sure you are there at 8pm sharp to enjoy the laser light show) & the Peak for spectacular views. The Peak is really beautiful at night. Suggest you go free & easy instead of enlisting an agency for a guided tour. It’s quite easy to move around in HK.

I’m from Philippines would like to know if there’s a tour package for Hong Kong Disneyland and Ocean Park?

We’re planning to go there for 3 days and 2 nights. What’s the nice hotels in between HK Disneyland and Ocean Park? Please help. thanks

full square brown cropped Hong Kong Tours Package

Players Club Tours answers:

Because Hong Kong is so expensive, I recommend staying in a decent budget hotel like the Evergreen Hotel in Tsim Sha Tsui. It’s near the Jordan metro station and is clean and affordable. We have stayed there four years in a row and they have long-term staff members who remember us. It’s not a large, fancy hotel, but we love it! Near shopping, great food, etc. You can find them online at:

http://www.evergreenhotel.com/

Both parks need one day each. It’s really easy to buy your own tickets! In fact, we bought our Disneyland tickets at a 7/11 in a subway station and I believe you can do the same for Ocean Park.

Both parks are a lot of fun!

Enjoy!

Players Club Tours answers:

Welcome to HK, the Pearl of the Orient! Its stunning Victoria Harbour and The Peak have just been rated as Asia’s No.1 skyline by a Japanese TV Station. HK women are among the most well educated in Asia, many are professionals or executives making good income. Half a century ago in the Suzie World era, many women that arrived from mainland China love foriegn passports, not sure if any Hongkongers still fond of immigrating abroad. Many young girls love sporty, humourous, capable young men, race and colour is not much an issue, rather it’s more important to be able to communite with them as many may not speak very fluent English.

It has rich culture and history of a perfect blend of the west and east. Walk up the Escalator which begins from Central District and goes all the way up to the mid Levels. Along the Escalator you’ll come across the early English settlement near Aberdeen Street, you’ll also pass by Soho, South of Hollywood Rd which gives a very distinct bar and restaurant street. Hollywood Rd is the famous antique street where genuine Chinese antique are sold.
From Causeway Bay – Central District – Tsimshatsui District – Mongkok District along the MTR (subway) route are where most of the fascinating shoppings, restaurants, night life and gorgeous harbour view lies.
If you like green, sea and nature, and are not in a rush in going to places visiting one of the outlying islands ie the Silvermine Bay of Lantau Island is quite relax and gives a completely different impression of Hong Kong than the one often see in pictures. You’ve to catch a ferry from the Central Pier right outside IFC Building. The ferry trip takes about 20 minutes, a very nice ride if you like the sea and not in a rush.
Another beautiful mountain and sea area is Sai Kung District, there’s a Seafood Street where you can handpick life seafood, have the restaurant cook them any way you like and enjoy it in front of the sea. There’re many beautiful mountain trails in Hong Kong, there’s one that goes all the way down to Aberdeen from the Peak. It’ll take more than an hour to walk down. In Aberdeen District (you could also take a bus in Central, Causeway Bay or Wanchai Districts to get there), the boat restaurant “JUMBO” lying out in the sea is quite amusing.
Hong Kong is renowned as the world’s shopping and dining paradise. You can eat like a billionaires, in the same token there’re many affordable places with unbelivable prices. HK has the cheapest MacDonald’s prices on earth.

Buying brand names is popular in HK since there’s zero sales tax nor import tariffs, brand names are often 10% – 50% cheaper than anywhere else in the world. Street vendors or flea markets is another interesting shopping paradise, they have all sorts of products selling at knockoff prices, eg the Ladies Street, the evening Temple Street vendors in Kowloon side, Stanley Market in HK side etc. Small street shops in Mongkok and Causeway Bay Districts may give you surprises too. There’re also many street vendors located in small side streets of Central District, Wan Chai District, near Johnston Road and Causeway Bay District, opposite to Sogo in the other side of the Henessy Road, that sell factory exports “left-overs”. Most prices in HK are fixed, you may be able to bargain a few $ though in small shops and street vendors. You will hardly find any fakes or copies in HK as the law enforcement is rather strict.
Everywhere in Hong Kong is well connected by its efficient and timely public transportation system, the MTR (subway), big and mini buses. Cost is from under US$1 – $2 per ride. It’s easiest to travel by MTR which runs pass all the central shopping and business districts, then either connect to a bus or walk to your destination. Separate fares are charged for each ride. HK is one of the most foreigner-friendly cities on earth, plus lots of fun and excitment, visitors often find the place the most vibrant, exciting city that never sleeps, even when you get bored at 3 AM, you could go and have a drink in the bar or even have a delicious late snack. Convenience Stores are located in almost every corner of the main streets and are opened around the clock. The best of all, HK is extremely easy to get around being supported by affordable and well connected public transportation. Many Hongkongers are very responsive, efficient and persistent in their work that make shopping, dining or doing business a very wonderful experience. You’ll also notice that Hongkongers will automatically stand by the side when walking up and down the stairs and escalators, not blocking those behind, which many Asian places are now following suit. Check www.discoverhongkong.com and have a wonderful stay!

I deal with this day in day out in work!!

Not fashion! But China’s cheap ass shit!!!!

Im an engineer and we get a lot of industrial supplies from China because they are so cheap, but the reason they are so cheap is because the quality is rubbish!!

In China they have workers queing up for jobs, so if a guy in the factory making this shirt quits, they can replace him in 5 seconds.
For this reason, employers dont care about their workers, workers dont care about their jobs, people get paid almost nothing. No-one has any pride in their jobs and everything they make is rubbish!!

Also the fact that labour is so cheap is what keeps the price down

How would I manage with a USD 3,500/month Job in Hong Kong?

I was given a break up of cost as below by a close friend of mine who used to work & live in Hong Kong sometime back, need to know if below still stands.

Rent – USD 1,000 (Kowloon area)
Meals – USD 600
Utilities – USD 100
Transport – USD 100
Misc – USD 300

I’m quite used to roughing it, so do not need all the luxuries that HK has to offer but in saying that I would like to stay in decent place & live an average life.

I’m married & my wife tagging along with me will be dependant on how well I can afford my life in HK with above pay.

3500 USD is around $24500 HKD for a month. It isn’t a bad salary. With some budget planning you should be able to get by.

Just don’t shop things you don’t need. As for meals, if you buy grocery instead of eating out, it is WAY cheaper!

Shopping in Hong Kong: Mall vs Airport?

Because I’m from NYC, I wasn’t planning on shopping there but have just found out that HK is the shopping paradise! I’m now dead set on buying cosmetics, but where should I go shopping? I’ll be staying in Kowloon area, so Festival Walk would be my first stop. Also, I read Tsim Sha Tsui is popular among tourists. My question is, is it cheaper at malls & department stores in town than at the airport? I’m not going to buy electronics; just high-end cosmetics and shoes for myself and perhaps some luxury brand goods for my friends birthdays.
Bonjour and Sasa are already included in my itinerary, but am I correct in assuming that their prices are cheaper than department stores?

Players Club Tours answers:

Prices in Bonjour and Sasa are cheaper than in department stores for sure. For the exact same brands and items, prices will be the same in department stores and at the airport.

Hong Kong is known as a shopping paradise because for almost all retail items, except for cosmetics, tobacco and alcohol, the city does not impose import duty and sales tax. This can add up to huge savings for high end products. I personally like shopping in NYC as much as in Hong Kong even though NYC comes with 8.875% sales tax because there is a limited “middle market” in Hong Kong when it comes to shoes and apparel. You can find more high end fashion brands in NYC, at the same time I find many affordable merchandise that offers both quality and good value. In Hong Kong most good quality clothes and shoes are more expensive as they are all made in western Europe and Japan, or it’s not worth getting something dirt cheap that offers no value.
